President Barack Obama was the 44th president of the United States. He was also the first African American president.
On June 18, 2026, the Obama Presidential Center will open in the Jackson Park neighborhood of Chicago. It is a place people can learn more about President Obama and his legacy. It includes an active community center where people can meet, learn from each other, share ideas, and even play basketball.

This is the Obama Presidential Center Museum. The outside of the building has quotations from President Obama’s speech marking the 50th anniversary of Civil Rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
Since President Franklin Roosevelt, each former president has opened a library that holds the archive from their administration. President Obama is the first president to have a digital archive. This means that many of the important papers, documents, and files of his administration are stored online.
Many presidential libraries have included museums. These are places where people can view important objects from their presidency. Visitors to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California, can board a plane that was used as Air Force One. This is the plane that presidents travel on. The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum has a dog treat dispenser. President Bush kept it in case a guest brought a pet. The William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum has an exhibit on gifts President Clinton received, including a wall clock that looks like musician Elvis Presley.
The Obama Center contains a museum. It includes a complete replica of the Oval Office, the workspace of the president. It features works of art from more than two-dozen famous artists. It also includes some fun items. There are Sesame Street puppets from a Sesame Street episode with First Lady Michelle Obama. There is also a giant marshmallow cannon that President Obama test-fired as part of a science fair.

The Obama Presidential Center is located in the South Side of Chicago, an area where President Obama began his career as a community organizer.
The Obama Presidential Center is more of a community space. In addition to the museum, it contains a public lawn, a playground, and a vegetable garden. There is a branch of the Chicago Public Library where people can check out books. It even contains an NBA regulation-size basketball court. President Obama was known to play pickup basketball with his staff at the White House during his term.
