What Are Midterm Elections?

Americans from many different backgrounds come together to vote in federal elections.

Have you watched campaign commercials on television or social media? Have you seen signs for candidates in people’s yards? Have you heard people talking about midterm elections? What exactly are midterm elections?

Midterm elections are federal, or national, elections that take place in the middle of a president’s 4-year term in office. In a midterm election, voters do not decide who is president. They do make  important decisions about who will represent them in each of the two houses of Congress. Citizens will choose representatives in the House of Representatives. In some states, citizens will also elect representatives to the United States Senate. There are also many states that are holding elections to decide who will be the state governor.
