The Winter Olympic Games

The Winter Olympic Games are a massive global event. Look at the crowd for this opening ceremony in 2018.

Have you ever been ice skating? When you ice skate, you move across ice with special boots on your feet. The boots have a metal blade to help you glide smoothly across the ice!

Figure skating is a sport where people perform amazing jumps and spins while ice skating. This month, figure skating will be a sport at a big competition called the Winter Olympic Games. Many countries will enter the Winter Olympic Games, and there will be many different sports as well. One thing that makes the Winter Olympic games unique is that each sport takes place on snow or ice!

The Winter Olympics were not always such a large event. Here is the opening ceremony of the first Winter Olympics in 1924 Chamonix, France.

The Winter Olympic Games started more than 100 years ago. Originally, winter sports like figure skating were part of the Summer Olympic Games. As they need snow and ice, it was difficult to always hold many winter sports during the summer. So, it was decided to create a separate Winter Olympic Games to give winter sports their own stage.

The first Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix, France, took place in 1924. It involved 250 athletes from 16 different countries. The Winter Olympics has grown over time. In 2026, there will be 2,900 athletes from 90 countries!

People travel from all over the world to watch the Winter Olympic Games. Many people also watch on television. The last Winter Olympic Games in 2022 were watched by more than 2 billion people around the world!

The Winter Olympic Games take place in different cities each time. The city where the competition takes place is known as the host city. This year, there will be two host cities, Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, both in Italy. This will be the third time that cities in Italy have hosted the Winter Olympic Games.

In 2026, ski mountaineering will be part of the Winter Olympic Games for the first time.

This year there are 16 different sports at the Winter Olympic Games. One brand new sport is ski mountaineering. This combines skiing and mountain climbing! Each ski mountaineering event features two stages. First comes the ascent, or the climb up the mountain. Then in the descent, athletes travel back down the mountain. They will compete to do this in the fastest time. During the ascent, the athletes will sometimes wear their skis and sometimes have their skis on their backpacks.

To make sure there is enough snow, some sports, like snowboarding, will use artificial snow. This is manufactured snow, which means people have made it. Water cannons combine water with air to make a mist. The mist freezes with cold air to make artificial snow. It is made to look and feel like real snow. There are plans to produce over 500 million gallons of artificial snow for the Winter Olympic Games!

What Do You Think? Which winter sports have you seen? Which would you like to find out more about?
