Tokyo is the capital of Japan and one of the most exciting cities in the world. More than 13 million people live in the city itself. Over 37 million people live in the larger Tokyo area. That makes Tokyo the most populated urban area in the world.
Tokyo sits on the island of Honshu, Japan’s largest island. It is a city of contrasts. In some parts of Tokyo, there are towering skyscrapers, neon lights, and crowded train stations. In other parts, visitors find quiet gardens, historic temples, and shrines. One of the most famous shrines is Meiji Jingu. It was built in 1920 to honor Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken. The shrine is reached by walking down a wide, tree-covered path. Passing under the tall trees feels calm and peaceful, even though the busy city is just beyond the gates.

Tokyo is also home to Shibuya, one of its liveliest districts. Thousands of people pass through every time the traffic lights change. Even at this busiest crossing in the world, no one steps off the curb until the signal says it’s time. These shared expectations show the respect that keeps Tokyo moving smoothly, even at such a fast pace.

The city is also known for its amazing food. One traditional dish is okonomiyaki. This savory pancake is made with batter and cabbage. There are also many other toppings such as shrimp, pork, or cheese that can be added. Chefs often prepare it on a hot grill in front of diners. Cooking okonomiyaki is more than a job for many chefs. It is both a passion and an art passed down over time.

Tokyo is not only Japan’s capital but also a center of culture, technology, and tradition. It shows how the old and new can live side by side.
What Do You Think? How do you think life in a huge city like Tokyo might be different from life where you live?
