Know That State: Virginia

The Blue Ridge Mountains extend through Virginia and seven other states from Pennsylvania to Georgia.

Virginia is one of the original 13 states that formed  the United States of America. Eastern Virginia is a coastal plain, which is a low-lying area of land next to an ocean. Western Virginia has many valleys and mountains. A valley is a low area of land that is between higher hills or mountains.

The Shenandoah Valley is about 150 miles long. This is about as long as 20,000 school buses. To the east are the Blue Ridge Mountains. The highest point there is 5,729 feet. In the Blue Ridge Mountains, you can visit  Shenandoah National Park. Some rocks in the park are over 1 billion years old! You can also see many animals  including deer, bobcats, black bears, and the Shenandoah Salamander. This salamander is not found anywhere else on Earth.
