The Pentagon took just 16 months to build.
Can you tell the shape of this building? It is in the shape of a pentagon, or a five-sided geometric shape, and the building is called The Pentagon. It is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense. It was built in Arlington, Virginia, in 1943. More than 20,000 people work in The Pentagon.
There are many other government buildings in northern Virginia. The headquarters, or main office, of the Central Intelligence Authority (CIA), is in Langley, Virginia. The CIA gathers intelligence, or information, to help keep the country safe. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has its main training academy in Quantico, Virginia. The FBI works to investigate crimes and protect the country. Also in Quantico is the Marine Corps Base Quantico, which is a large training camp for United States Marines Corps.
