Dolly Parton was a legendary American figure. She became famous as a country music singer. She also found success as an actress and a businesswoman. She had a very generous spirit and used her success to help others.
Dolly Parton was born in 1946 in Sevier County, Tennessee, in a region called the Smoky Mountains. She was the fourth of 12 children. Her family did not have much money. They lived in a one-room cabin. However, Dolly grew up happy and loved music from an early age.
As a musician, Dolly Parton wrote more than 3,000 songs. She became popular not just with country music fans, but with fans of all types of music. She had number one songs in both the country and pop charts. She worked with hip-hop, R&B, pop, rock, and Latin musicians. Many different artists have performed their own versions of songs she wrote. Whitney Houston had a number one hit with her version of Parton’s song, “I Will Always Love You.” Dolly Parton was inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She also starred in several movies including 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias.

These children from the United Kingdom received books from the Imagination Library. Dolly Parton started the Imagination Library in Sevier County, Tennessee. It grew nationwide and now serves children in five different countries.
Dolly Parton’s impact went far beyond entertainment, however. She is well known for her work with charities. She started the Imagination Library. This charity mails one free book a month to children. Last year, the Imagination Library mailed books to more than three million children. Dolly also gave large donations to hospitals and medical research.

Dolly Parton never forgot about the area where she grew up. She created education scholarships for students in Sevier County. Many people have gone to college thanks to Dolly. In 1986, she opened a theme park in a town in the Smoky Mountains called Pigeon Forge. The park is called Dollywood. It is now the leading employer in the area, employing 4,000 people. Dollywood brings many visitors to the Smoky Mountains. This is good for local businesses. It is estimated that Dollywood brings $1.8 billion a year to the area.
Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026. She was 80 years old. She was surrounded by her family. She will be remembered for her music, her kindness, and her charitable works.
