In some countries, November means winter is coming soon. The days will start to get darker earlier. There are many light festivals around the world in November. These festivals use light in amazing ways!
The Yi Peng Lantern Festival is held every year in Thailand. The festival represents the beauty of the full moon. It can happen on different dates each year but always takes place on a night where there is a full moon, which is when the moon can be completely seen from Earth.
At the festival, people release lots of lanterns into the air. The lanterns can be made from different materials and can often include rice paper and bamboo. Each lantern has a candle or other fuel source attached to create hot air inside. The hot air makes the lantern float.
Some people decorate their houses and gardens with lanterns. Lanterns can also be seen hanging from sticks, buildings, and trees, and even floating on water. Sometimes the hot air makes these hanging lanterns spin around.
