President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced a summit meeting [a meeting between the leaders of two countries] on June 12th. It could be one of the most important meetings of the decade. But it might not happen.
North Korea has been trying to make nuclear weapons. They have conducted tests that have threatened parts of the United States. The United States and many other countries have imposed economic sanctions [punishments] on North Korea. The North Korean economy needs help from other countries. They are willing to talk to the United States about ending their nuclear program in exchange for help.
With only weeks before the summit, President Donald Trump cancelled the summit. North Korea has not been clear about whether they will stop their nuclear program. In Donald Trump’s view, they need to do this or there is no point in talking to them. Now, representatives from both sides are talking to each other about whether they can have this summit. Donald Trump says that if it seems like they can come to an agreement, he will go to the summit.
One person that is trying to help make the summit happen is South Korean president Moon Jae-In. South Korea and North Korea fought a war between 1950 and 1953. The war never officially ended. It is at a cease-fire. Recently, North Korea and South Korea have been talking about formally ending the war. Better relations between the United States and North Korea will help them do that. Moon Jae-In has been talking to both Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un to help them solve their problems.
UPDATE: After much hard work, the summit between the two leaders did take place on June 12. They signed a statement saying that North Korea would end its nuclear program. This could be the first step towards a better relationship between North Korea and the United States. However, it will still take time and hard work to make sure both sides keep their promises.
What Do You Think? Do you think Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un should meet? How to you think different countries should try to solve their differences?
