You have probably heard the words “social distancing” in the news. Social distancing is a way to stop the spread of COVID-19, the new coronavirus. Scientists believe that the virus spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. Droplets with the virus can then land in the mouths or noses of people nearby. If we are at least six feet away from other people, the virus is less likely to spread.
To avoid spreading the virus, it’s important to not gather in large groups or go to places that are crowded. Wearing a mask is another way to keep from spreading the virus when we are outside our homes or in essential places like the grocery store.
Social distancing isn’t always easy. It’s hard to be away from friends and family, and we miss going to school and seeing movies. Research shows us that social distancing is a way to keep ourselves and others around us healthier.
Being socially distanced from others doesn’t mean that we are all alone. If you miss your family, friends, or teachers, you might call them on the phone or visit with them online. You can also get fresh air and exercise. Walking, hiking, and riding your bike are great ways to spend your time—just be sure to stay six feet away from people who don’t live with you in your house. This keeps you and other people safe!
What Do You Think? How does social distancing help you and people around you? What are you doing to stay healthy?
