Do you know what AI is? AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. It means an intelligence that comes from a computer, rather than a human. AIs can perform complex tasks such as learning and problem solving. AIs are changing many things today. Scientists use AI for research. Engineers use AI to check for problems that could break something. As technology gets better the uses of AI will only increase. AI is even changing schools.
With the rise of AI powered tools like chatbots and search assistants, many students have been using AI to help them in school. Some students use AI as a research tool. However, some students are using AI to write reports, or parts of reports. This can be a big problem. Since these types of AI tools draw from sources across the internet. They can plagiarize other people’s work. Plagiarism happens when someone uses someone else’s work without permission and passes it off as their own work. If you turn in a paper than an AI wrote for you, it is considered plagiarism.
In addition to the problem of plagiarism, AIs have other issues. When chatbots or search assistants try to answer a question, they gather information from the Internet. There is a lot of inaccurate information on the Internet. AIs cannot always tell if the information they get is correct. Sometimes it even gets information from other AIs that got information wrong. Even if AI is only used as a tool, students need to take time to double check the accuracy of the information they get.
Teachers are also facing challenges from AI. So many students are using AI in their work, that they are using tools to detect reports written by AI. These tools are getting better and more popular. Even without these tools, AIs write very differently than students. AIs write at a level expected from college students and graduates. Teachers can often tell if a report was written by AI even without the help of tools. However, the time teachers spend on detecting AI in work is making them rethink their assignments. Some teachers are coming up with new kinds of assignments that test students on thinking skills that AI cannot do.
What Do You Think? Have you used AI for schoolwork? How did you use it?
