Trump to Give State of the Union Address

Donald Trump will give his first State of the Union Address in front of Congress this month.

Do you ever look back on the last year and think about what you’ve accomplished? Do you start a new year thinking about what more you could do? Well, so does the President of the United States!

Each year in January, the president gives a State of the Union Address. This is a time when the president looks back on the past year. The president will highlight the country’s accomplishments. This year will be President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union Address.

Trump has been a controversial president. His approval rating is very low for his first year in office. This means many Americans don’t think he is doing a good job. There is also a federal investigation [when the government looks at something to see if any laws were broken] into Russia trying to help Donald Trump get elected.

The State of the Union speech is Donald Trump’s chance to convince people he is doing a good job as president. People expect Trump to talk about the strong economy in the United States. The unemployment rate [number of people who do not have jobs] is low. The stock market [an indication of how much people value American companies] is up.

Trump may also talk about the work the military has done to fight the terrorist group ISIS and his appointment of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch. He will also speak about more changes that he wants to make to the country.

After Donald Trump speaks, somebody from the opposition political party, the Democrats, will give a response. This person will argue that the country needs to go in a different direction from what the president says. With these two viewpoints in mind, people will discuss for themselves how they think the president is doing.

What Do You Think? How would you evaluate the job a president is doing?
